Making Moves: From Women’s Magazines to Local News

So…I’m moving to Alaska.
Anchorage, Alaska that is.
Six months ago, when I was fresh out of grad school, you couldn’t have told me that my next newsroom would be in the Last Frontier.
But, when your dream job calls…it’s easy; you GO.

Now, let me clarify…the road to said dream job has not been easy–by any means.

Turning down my first full-time, career-launching job offer at 23 was honestly one of the most fearless things I’ve ever done. The pay was good, the location was prime, and the actual position was something that I was more than capable of handling.

But it just wasn’t right. So I said no.

The next few months brought more interviews, more job offers, and (I’m not gonna lie) a TON of discouragement. Luckily, “as a woman thinketh in her heart, so is she.” And my heart was confident in my abilities and faithful that God would deliver.

And deliver He did.
(cue a “Won’t He doooo it?!” and a kick-flip praise dance)

I am now a Web Editor and Reporter for KTVA-TV in Anchorage, AK.
It is literally my dream job for this stage in my career.
I get to exercise my techie/web-nerd side and I still get to be in the field, camera at the ready, telling stories that matter.

Thus, a celebration is in order!

  • I’m celebrating my official transition from women’s magazines to local news. (Thank you Hearst, thank you Modern Luxury Media, and thank you all publications that I’ve contributed a video and/or a voice to.)
  • I’m celebrating my move from the lower 48 states. (Chicago, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, NYC, and everywhere in-between…I’ve had a blast.)
  • I’m celebrating my faith and my fearlessness. (Both will get you farther than fear and doubt EVER will.)

I’m off to the promised land, y’all.
I’ll come back and visit I promise!

And for anyone currently living in Anchorage that happens to read this post, your city just got a liiiittllee (lot) more fabulous.

I wish you well young lady. I worked for a short time in Barrow…I’m from Baltimore so trust me it was an experience but all in all it was a means to end and it definitely made it possible for me to get something I wanted. Alaska is short on diversity but you appear to be a very personable young lady so I know you will do just fine! Good Luck !!
